Soon-To-Be Velvet Chairs

upholsteredchair1

Since I moved into my apartment I’ve been dying to trade in my parents’ old club chairs for something that was more me, but chairs are expensive. Especially when you have your eye on chairs that resemble something above.

I decided to just keep my eye out for some vintage chairs on Craig’s List or hopefully stumble across a great deal in a store. Many months and fruitless Craig’s List searches later, I finally happened upon a fabulous pair of retro tufted club chairs! They were right here in Chicago, found by a little company called Department. The price was right too!

Now for the tough part — picking a color of velvet. Right now I’m leaning towards West Elm’s fabric by the yard because of it’s durability and cost. Has anyone actually used their fabric before? Or do you have a piece covered in their Performance Velvet?

After the color is decided, I’d love to add some nailhead detailing and possibly legs that make the chair a little bit higher off the ground. And finally, I’ll need some great pillows. I’ve already got my eye on a few from Arianna Belle’s shop.

So now, I’d love to hear what you think? Which color velvet would you choose??!

Great find! Love the shape of them. I think the whole gray trend is going to be out the door soon and in, say, 3 years, you might regret choosing the grey velvet. I think the navy is super, super chic and I view navy as another neutral. Mixed with any bright pop of color (pink, tangerine, chartreuse) or even blacks and browns, navy will look fresh and fun. I would do a brass nail head trim. My advice is to get an upholstery price quote from several folks…make sure you shop around! Cannot wait to see them finished!

Great advice Madison, I was leaning towards the dark grey, but now I’m not sure, maybe I’ll do the blue!

Blair! What a fun project! I have two awesome vintage chairs at home too that I’ve been dying to recover /reupholster for a couple of years now! You’ve inspired me to get it done! Are you reupholstering them yourself or finding a professional? Love that link for the pillows! So Fun!

Caroline, I’m going to have them professionally done. It will never happen I do it!

The navy velvet looks to die for! This is the second velvet post I’ve seen today…maybe it’s coming back for sure? I’d say do the navy and the Cheery Watermelon pillows or Interesting Neutral. P.S. I’m an email subscriber but I had to comment on this post I love it!

I’ve never re-covered a chair, but I want to! I have a very similar looking pistachio green chair. It’s vintage and looks a lot like the blue one on the top left of your post, except that it is on a swivel base. I’ve held on to it for years after begging my parents not to toss it. I’d like to add legs and re-cover. Can you recommend any specific videos or tutorials for a beginner?

Hi Kelly, I wish I could,I’m not actually recovering them myself, but having them done professionally. I don’t know how to sew, so not a project I’m ready to tackle myself quite yet!

Gotcha, I wonder what it will cost me to do the same. I’m not sure I’m ready to tackle it either!

I was quoted $400 by the company I called, I think the tufting made it a little higher than average, but shop around and ask places before settling with one!

P.S. I’m a sucker for grey. I also did a Behr grey paint project. Last year, I painted a 5 shelf antique bookcase with a similar shade as your cathedral and I think I am going to paint my bedroom dresser next. I still love the grey, not tired of it yet!
